Meet Sofia Castillo

Sofia Castillo is a London-based flautist working across orchestral, chamber, and solo performance. She has recently worked as Co-Principal with the National Symphony Orchestra and as Principal Piccolo with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. She also performs regularly with groups including the City of London Sinfonia, English Touring Opera, and the London Contemporary Orchestra.

In 2022–23, she was a member of Southbank Sinfonia, working on projects with the Royal Opera House Orchestra, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Alongside her orchestral work, Sofia performs as a soloist and chamber musician in the UK and internationally. She has appeared at venues including the Barbican Centre, Cadogan Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Bridgewater Hall. Her recordings include Ravel’s Chansons Madécasses (Champs Hill Records, 2021) and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade with the National Symphony Orchestra (Chasing the Dragon, 2023).

Sofia graduated from the Royal College of Music, London, with a Master of Performance degree. She was a Doctor Knobel Fund Scholar and studied under Sue Thomas, Celia Chambers, and Stuart McIlwham. Her awards include first prize at the 28th Gianluca Campochiaro International Chamber Music Competition in 2020 (with pianist Marie Otaka), first prize in the RCM Solo Flute Competition in 2017, and the Edward and Helen Hague Senior Woodwind Prize in 2017.
