Meet Brian Choi

Brian Choi is a Hong Kong-born conductor based in London, with experience in symphonic and operatic repertoire across the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia. His work encompasses guest conducting, assisting internationally established conductors, and directing orchestral and opera productions, with a particular interest in the music of Richard Wagner.

Brian studied at Diocesan Boys' School in Hong Kong before continuing his musical education at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, where he studied conducting with Professor Tim Redmond and Dominic Wheeler. In 2023, he held the Junior Fellowship in Conducting at Guildhall, assisting guest conductors including Lionel Bringuier and Roberto González-Monjas on symphonic projects at the Barbican Centre.

Since completing his fellowship, Brian has worked as an assistant conductor on projects involving leading international orchestras and conductors. His engagements include assisting Tan Dun with the London Philharmonic Orchestra for a Beethoven Symphony No. 9 subscription concert and Decca recording, as well as Roberto González-Monjas with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. His experience also includes work with the National Radio Orchestra of Romania.

Brian was selected by conductor Daniel Harding to participate in the YMCG Festival in China as a Conducting Fellow and public masterclass participant, where he conducted Mahler's Symphony No. 1. He continues to undertake guest conducting engagements with orchestras in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia.

Opera forms an important part of Brian's musical career. Since 2023, he has worked on the music staff of London Opera Company productions of Wagner's operas, serving in assistant and off-stage conducting roles. His experience includes Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung, with further projects involving Tristan und Isolde in 2026 and Parsifal in 2027.

His commitment to Wagner's music was recognised in 2025 when he was selected by the Wagner Society UK and the Richard Wagner Stipendienstiftung as a Bayreuth Stipendiat. During the 2025–26 season, his engagements include three productions of Die Walküre across the United Kingdom, Europe, and China.

Beyond Wagner, Brian serves as Music Director of Opera SQUASHED, with plans to conduct Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and Beethoven's Fidelio during the 2026–27 season.

In 2022, Brian founded the Sutton Philharmonic Orchestra in London, where he continues to serve as Music Director. Under his direction, the orchestra has explored repertoire by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, and Wagner. A notable performance was a semi-staged presentation of Bach's St John Passion on Palm Sunday in 2024.

The orchestra's future projects include Wagner's Die Walküre and a revival of Hans Pfitzner's Three Preludes to Palestrina, reflecting Brian's interest in presenting both established repertoire and works heard less frequently in London.

Through his work as a conductor, musical director, and collaborator, Brian continues to develop his artistic activities across symphonic and operatic performance, bringing particular attention to the dramatic and musical possibilities of large-scale orchestral works.
